The delegations of the Colombian Government and the guerrilla of the National Liberation Army (ELN) will resume peace negotiations on November 30 in Mexico City, after the crisis generated after the kidnapping of the father of Liverpool soccer player Luis Díaz.

“We will dedicate our efforts to overcoming the crisis that the dialogue process is currently going through, generated by the kidnapping of Luis Manuel Díaz. We appreciate the commitment of the Government of Mexico and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to the construction of peace in Colombia,” expressed the government delegation in a statement collected by the Europa Press news agency.

This fifth cycle, of which the ELN has not yet confirmed its presence, was originally scheduled for early November but was postponed twice, the last due to Díaz’s kidnapping.

After that episode, the Government delegates summoned the ELN representatives to the table to an “urgent and extraordinary meeting” to discuss the end of the kidnapping and it was assured at that time that the meeting was essential to begin this last round of negotiations. .

Ten days after the kidnapping, the ELN released the soccer player’s father and admitted that it was a “mistake,” although it insisted that it was not a violation of the ceasefire, because the group did not commit to not carrying out “finance” operations. ” like the “deprivations of liberty”, in the words of the group’s commander, alias Antonio García.

Gustavo Petro’s Executive is advancing in a process of conversations with several organizations, after last year Congress approved as a “state policy” its “total peace” initiative to end the internal clashes in the country.

On November 21, 2022, the Government and the ELN set up the first round of the dialogue table in Caracas in search of advancing a peace process that was paralyzed during the administration of former president Iván Duque (2018-22).

The ELN guerrilla is the oldest remaining in America after the disarmament of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
