The Red Bull driver set the fastest time on Saturday ahead of Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc (+0.139 seconds) and Oscar Piastri (+0.337) in the McLaren. For the triple champion from the Netherlands, it was the 32nd pole of his career and the twelfth of this season. Verstappen is aiming for his 19th victory of the season at the last Grand Prix of the year, and it would be the 21st victory for Red Bull.
The battle for second place in the constructors’ championship between Mercedes and Ferrari remains exciting, the “Silver Arrows” have a lead of four points. George Russell (+0.343) starts the floodlit race at the Yas Marina Circuit from fourth place on the grid, while record world champion Lewis Hamilton made a mistake and is in eleventh place. But Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz also couldn’t get past 16th place, meaning the Spaniard also has to start a race to catch up. “The race speed is basically there, but on the last lap I ran into traffic,” complained Sainz.
