Plane crash at Kasberg Picture:
At around 12 p.m. the emergency services were informed of a plane crash in the Grünau im Almtal area (Gmunden district). The Austro Control air traffic control observed the disappearance of the aircraft on the radar screen. Fire brigade, rescue services, police and mountain rescue units immediately moved out to reach the alleged crash site, which could not yet be precisely located at the time.
Through intensive search operations, supported by rescue and police helicopters, the emergency services managed to locate wreckage near the Sepp Huber Hut on Kasberg around 1:30 p.m. Late in the afternoon the suspicion was confirmed that all the occupants had died. A clear identification could not yet be made late Saturday afternoon. The reason for the accident is currently unknown, as is the exact destination – the Upper Austrian State Criminal Police Office has taken over the investigation. The only thing that seems clear at the moment is that the plane was observed in a zigzag course over the Kasberg.
According to the Aviation Safety Network platform, the aircraft was a single-engine Rockwell Commander 112B. She started in Pribram in the Czech Republic and was on her way to Medulin in Istria.
Assessment of a flight expert
The OÖN spoke to Christian Klopf, the chairman of Scharnstein airfield, about how he assessed the situation. He says the following: “If my information is correct, then this type of aircraft was not suitable for crossing the Alps in this weather. The aircraft is only partially suitable for instrument flight, so the pilot cannot fly above the clouds and had to fly on sight. That was at extremely difficult due to today’s northern traffic situation. There was snowfall, strong wind and turbulence. There would be a safer route over the Phyrn Pass and Graz for such days. The pilot may have caught the wrong valley entrance with the Almtal and couldn’t make it to the end of the valley because of the poor visibility more, to contact. I assume that the aircraft accident commission will determine the causes of the accident. According to Austro Control, every pilot must carry out a flight route briefing before departure and record it in writing. Everything is there – from the take-off weight to the planned Route.”
