Nordic combination: Lamparter and Rettenegger on mass start podium

The defending World Cup champion was once again only defeated by Jarl Magnus Riiber in the mass start competition at the start in Ruka, who sailed far away from everyone with 153.5 meters and celebrated his 59th World Cup victory in a superior manner. Stefan Rettenegger jumped onto the podium for the first time ever in third place, with which the red-white-red combined teams documented their strong start.

Lamparter finished fourth in the 10 km mass start race in the morning, just 0.6 seconds behind race winner Vinzenz Geiger (25:29.0 mins). The German was only 0.3 seconds ahead of Riiber and his German compatriot Johannes Rydezk. The two Germans fell back to 16th and 17th place in the jumping.

“Today I had a really good cross-country run. It may not have been the best jump in the competition, but I have to say, I had really little speed and still had a solid jump,” Lamparter also looked at his 134.5 m jump back. He could only shake his head appreciatively at Riiber. “What Jarl is doing at the moment is incredible, he has to be congratulated.” The Tyrolean was happy to be on the podium with Rettenegger. “Cool for the team effort, that makes us proud, we can continue working like this.”

Lamparter second overall

Rettenegger improved to third place with a 138.5 m jump and, after several fourth and fifth places, was happy to have reached the next milestone. “The fact that it has finally worked is of course a great relief,” said Rettenegger. “It was really a great day today. I had great material on the cross-country ski trail today, ran great and then everything was possible on the hill. I was able to show one of my best jumps.” He was also happy that he shared the podium with his teammate. “With Jo at my side it’s of course twice as nice. We can be very happy with how we started the winter.”

Franz-Josef Rehrl appeared to have recovered well from his cold. Coming in 31st on the cross-country ski trail, 59.2 seconds behind, he performed strongly on the hill: with 140 meters he catapulted himself to eighth place, meaning three Austrians ended up in the top ten. Riiber is ahead in the overall standings with 290 points, Lamparter is 55 points behind in second, Rettenegger (199) fourth.

Jumping coach Christoph Bieler, who is currently also head coach, was also satisfied. “With today’s mass start with two people on the podium, we have a very reconciliatory end to the weekend, which perhaps didn’t start quite the way we wanted,” said the former top athlete. “We are very happy that we have two athletes who can compete at the top and we have also seen that Franz-Josef can compete again after his cold.”
