BAD LEONFELDEN/URFAHR SURROUNDINGS. On the occasion of the “International 16 Days against Violence against Women” from November 25th to December 10th, the right to a life free of violence is being demanded worldwide – including in the Urfahr-Raum district. At the top of the agenda of the early SPÖ women is the demand for a women’s shelter for the region, and they point out a large number of entry bans. “We are talking about violent attacks on women in their own four walls. One in three women is affected by violence – women of all social classes,” inform Beverley Allen-Stingeder and Susanne Leitner.
Too much violence
“In our district alone there were 89 entry bans in one year, and that’s 89 too many,” emphasizes Leitner. Upper Austria currently has six women’s shelters – in Linz, Wels, Steyr, Braunau, Ried im Innviertel and Vöcklabruck. A location in the Lower Mühlviertel is currently being planned. “We are calling for a women’s shelter and a women’s transitional apartment for our district. Neither is available to women in the Urfahr area,” says Beverley Allen-Stingeder, district women’s chairwoman. This makes it more difficult for women and girls from rural areas to reach them.
Lots of supporters
The women found support for their demands at their rally in Bad Leonfelden. In order to end violence against women in the long term, in addition to expanding victim protection institutions, old role models must also be broken down. There is definitely a need to catch up in Upper Austria. “In 2012, the funding for the women’s advice centers was cut and has not even been increased since then! However, personnel costs and rents have also increased at the women’s advice centers. That’s why an increase for 2024 is essential,” demand the women.
