Defeated the league leaders twice within a week

Playful class, patience and passion were the ingredients of the game in which the Bundesliga women of the Mühlviertel Volleys were able to defeat VBC Höchst 3:1 (25:19; 25:18, 22:25, 25:17) yesterday afternoon. The Mühlviertel women managed to win against the league leaders for the second time within a week. The fact that the Vorarlberg women are still sitting on the league throne is solely due to the fact that they have played one more game than coach Lydia Trauner’s team. However, Höchst’s lead over the Mühlviertler women has shrunk to a single point since yesterday.

The encounter “second against first” initially clearly went in favor of the hosts from the Mühlviertel. However, a quick point deficit in the third set showed why Höchst is currently leading the table: with a strong block and sensational defensive actions, the Vorarlberg women gnawed at the Mühlviertel Volleys’ self-confidence. Every Perger point felt like it had to be done three times before it could actually be credited. The guests managed to reduce the score to 1:2 and force the Pergers to play an even game for long stretches in the fourth set. It was only towards the end of the fourth set that Höchst, who had won 3-0 against Waldviertel on Saturday, lost their strength and Perg was able to convert the first match point straight away into an acclaimed 3-1 victory.

“Stayed mentally strong”

“What Höchst defended today was once again incredible. A big compliment to our players for remaining mentally strong,” said sports director Josef Trauner after the game. Middle blocker Maike Rieger said about this game of patience against the top team: “We knew that they would bring back almost everything we shot over the net and we specifically prepared for that in training. We believed in our strength and were rewarded in the end .”
