At 190,500 tonnes, the harvest volume in commercial fruit production was 10 percent below the ten-year average and a fifth below the previous year’s level, as Statistics Austria announced on Monday. There were particularly high shortages of plums, apricots and pears.Vienna. In addition to frost, wet and cold weather during the flowering period with little bee flight reduced the yield of pome and stone fruit. In Styria, according to Statistics Austria, a large proportion of the apple blossoms were destroyed and the stone fruit harvest was largely destroyed. 156,300 tonnes of apples were harvested (-18 percent compared to 2022, -10 percent compared to the 10-year average), almost three quarters of which were in Styria. There were even higher harvest losses for pears due to earlier flowering; at 6,600 tonnes, a decrease of 45 percent compared to the previous year and a decline of 24 percent compared to the ten-year average.
The apricot harvest in the Wachau was particularly badly affected
In Lower Austria, the apricot harvest, especially in the Wachau, was once again affected by severe frost. At 3,833 tonnes of apricots, the quantity was around 17 percent lower than in the previous year and more than a third lower than the long-term average. In Carinthia and Styria, severe storms with heavy rain and hail reduced fruit production.
The plum harvest was extremely poor this year; at 1,200 tons, it remained well below the previous year’s level (−45 percent) and below the ten-year average (−43 percent). Strawberry production fell to 14,600 tons compared to last year’s record harvest (-14 percent compared to 2022), but was still above average (+10 percent compared to the ten-year average).
