“Equal rights must not stop with hygiene products. That is why we demand that politicians finally take action here,” Carolin Kracmer, Marketing Director at gurkerl.at, was quoted as saying.
Until further notice, selected sanitary pads and tampons are available free of charge in the online shop. Gurkerl.at bears the costs of the campaign alone. “We hope that the campaign will give new impetus to existing initiatives on this topic. There is already a law in Scotland where municipal and educational institutions must provide menstrual products. Why is this not possible in Austria and Germany?” asked Kracmer.
A study by the organization Plan International shows how urgent the issue is, according to which the number of people who delay changing sanitary pads and tampons for financial reasons is twelve percent, and among those under 24 it is even 18 percent. According to a survey by the opinion research institute YouGov, 66 percent of those surveyed are in favor of providing free access to items such as tampons or sanitary pads in community centers or pharmacies.
The free menstrual products can be found in a separate category on gurkerl.at, it said. The shop is keeping an open mind as to how long the campaign will run – but at least until the end of the year. It was also emphasized that for technical reasons the products mentioned are offered in the online shop for one cent.
