A brief hesitation, a small step back, another look at the company logo to make sure you’ve got to the right entrance – that’s what many people feel at the moment when they visit the new coffee house on Linzer Landstrasse for the first time. “We would have expected more,” say Lira and Aylin, who know the Starbucks branches in Vienna and the one in Plus City in Pasching. The latter opened its doors in September 2022. At the beginning of November this year, the global coffee shop chain also arrived in downtown Linz. “It was advertised as being so big – but it’s really a small shop,” say the young women.
Patrisia was just in the restaurant and looks through the window again at the 3 bar stools with a view of the Mozart Crossing, a counter and a few shelves with the chain’s well-known fan articles. She thinks it’s good that there is now a branch in the city center. “The employees are super nice. ABut it’s a shame that you can’t sit and chill here with friends. The store could be bigger,” says the 19-year-old.
That’s what it’s like for some people who visit the first branch of the coffee shop chain in downtown Linz. The topic of conversation at the moment is less the quality of the coffee and more the size or lack thereof of the place. Did Linz get the world’s smallest Starbucks?
Starbucks does not want to comment directly on this – or on the exact number of square meters. “The size of our Starbucks stores varies according to different concepts, which we adapt to the needs of our guests, the location and the location,” the company says. From kiosks to take-away stores to restaurants with spacious lobbies and terraces, everything is there. The decision as to which store size is suitable for which location is carefully considered – and the size of a branch is not necessarily a measure of its importance or success, “but rather the result of our targeted adjustments to the respective market conditions and guest preferences.”
The company does not want to accept the impression that Linz is being treated as a stepchild. It is emphasized that every branch opening is carefully planned. “The choice of location, branch size and concept are strategically considered to ensure that we implement our growth strategy and are present where our guests are. The branch in Linz is therefore an expression of our adaptability and our commitment to innovative solutions in line with local requirements. ”
Are there further plans for Linz, Upper Austria or Austria? There are expansion plans in Austria, and new locations are being continually evaluated. However, the company says that no information can be given about specific projects at this point. For everyone who is interested in future coffee houses in Austria, the only thing left to do at the moment is: coffee brew reading.
