Mateusz Morawiecki: Government office briefly extended

Although he does not have a majority in parliament, the current head of government, Mateusz Morawiecki, presented his new cabinet yesterday. He probably won’t be in office for long: on December 11th, Morawiecki will have to ask a vote of confidence in parliament and thus fail.

The opposition sees the swearing in of the Morawiecki cabinet by President Andrzej Duda as a delaying tactic. Duda commissioned his party colleague Morawiecki to form a government in mid-November. Its national conservative party PiS became the strongest party again in the October election, but has no chance of a majority due to a lack of partners in the Sejm, the Polish parliament. In the election on October 15, an alliance of three pro-European parties led by former EU Council President Donald Tusk won a majority; the three parties have already agreed on a coalition agreement. Only after the vote of confidence is it the turn of the current opposition to form a government.
