Many Austrians regularly suffer from the proverbial widespread disease of back pain. According to current analyzes by experts at MedUni Vienna, the symptoms can be effectively alleviated by training on vibration plates.

The Viennese specialists evaluated twelve clinical studies with a total of 821 test subjects on the topic of whole-body vibration treatment for non-specific back pain. The study participants trained two to three times a week for two to 18 weeks using the modern training equipment. The vibration frequency – how strongly the plate vibrates – varied between five and 30 hertz.

Although the training modalities varied greatly from study to study, the results of the studies were still clear, according to the researchers. Depending on the question, different positive effects could be demonstrated. On the one hand, the subjects’ pain was reduced, and on the other hand, their daily activities and physical functions improved. Deep sensitivity (perception of certain stimuli from within, note) could also be increased through vibration training, according to the experts at the University Clinic for Physical Medicine, Rehabilitation and Occupational Medicine. However, there were no side effects.

Osteoporosis and muscle building

The vibration of the plate on which you perform various strength exercises while standing or sitting causes a reflex reaction in the muscles. This means that the different muscles tense in order to stabilize and maintain balance. The deep muscles throughout the body are also activated. This in turn promotes muscle building and relieves tension.

However, the vibration plates cannot significantly accelerate the weight loss process.

The training should be supervised by a specialist, especially at the beginning, in order to minimize the risk of injury and signs of wear and tear. It is not suitable for people with previous health problems or children under 13 years of age. Pregnant women should also avoid it due to the shock, experts advise.

The whole body vibration treatment originally comes from space travel and was developed in the 1970s. The aim was to reduce the risk of osteoporosis (bone loss, note) in long-term astronauts. The training had the desired effect, which was proven in studies.
