“The fact is that artificial intelligence will determine our everyday life, so schools shouldn’t ignore it,” says one of the 334 educators who were surveyed by the Austrian Federal Publishing House (öbv) about how they deal with artificial intelligence in everyday school life.
In principle, a large majority of educators in Austria are in favor of the use of AI in school operations. More than 70 percent are in favor of young people learning how to use AI properly at school. Only 10.8 percent of those surveyed were in favor of a ban.
Almost half of the teachers (44.1 percent) have already used AI programs as an aid in everyday school life. AI programs are particularly popular as tools when preparing lessons. 54.1 of respondents who use AI said they had already created worksheets for their classes this way. A little less than half of the educators using AI have already used such programs directly in their lessons. By far the most popular AI program among teachers is ChatGPT. 97.3 percent of all teachers who rely on AI help use (among other things) the software from the US company OpenAI.
There is a strong desire for further training in this area. More than 70 percent of educators say that they would like better options to help them become proficient in using AI. Around 60 percent demand clear rules on how they can use these programs in everyday school life.
In principle, teachers are free to use these tools, the Upper Austrian Education Directorate confirms to the OÖN: “Within the framework of the curriculum, educators are free to decide how they hold lessons or prepare for them,” says the Education Director’s office Alfred Klampfer. Isn’t there a risk that teachers will simply adopt any mistakes made by the AI? “Whether colleagues use AI or take tasks from a textbook doesn’t make a big difference. In both cases, teachers are responsible for ensuring that the quality is right,” says the Education Directorate.
