39 dead found in truck: smuggler convicted in England

The now 26-year-old was driven by greed when he and others smuggled migrants into the country several times.

The man had denied involvement in people smuggling and said he thought he was just getting involved in alcohol smuggling. However, a jury found him guilty of aiding and abetting unlawful migration.

The dead were discovered in an airtight truck in Grays, east of London, on October 23, 2019. The 31 men and eight women from Vietnam had each paid more than 10,000 euros to be brought to Britain. According to experts, the temperature in the sealed container rose to up to 40 degrees during the crossing from Belgium to England. The migrants had no chance of survival.

Several people in Belgium and Great Britain have already been convicted in connection with the case. The two leaders of the smuggling gang received sentences of 27 and 20 years in prison, respectively. The driver of the truck was sentenced to 13 years and four months in prison. A trial is underway in Paris against numerous other men allegedly involved in the smuggling operation.
