Germany finalizes more restrictions and debates mandatory vaccination

Although the situation has improved somewhat in recent days, the authorities consider that it is still alarming, with tens of thousands of infections daily and numerous hospitals collapsed and others close to saturation.

The German body for the fight against infectious diseases, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), notified this Thursday 73,209 new infections in the last 24 hours, the German news agency DPA reported.

This is the second time that Germany has exceeded 70,000 infections a day. The previous one was last week, when authorities announced a record 75,961.

The RKI said that in the last day there were 388 deaths from coronavirus, bringing the total to 102,178.

71.4% of the population of Germany (59.4 million people) was vaccinated, 68.6% (57.0 million) with the full schedule, while 12.5% (10.4 million) have already received a booster dose.

The context for advancing in the fight against the pandemic is complicated by the current transition period in Germany, between the departure of Merkel and the entry of Scholz, whose parliamentary ratification will not be given until next week.

This meeting and the restrictions promoted by the new coalition should show, according to the future chancellor, that “there is not a power vacuum, as some evoke at this time.”

The most delicate point of the new offensive against Covid-19 is mandatory vaccination, which could be decided from February or March.

The social democrat Scholz surprised by advocating this radical measure, already approved in Austria and the object of reflection within the European Union (EU).

Before the end of the year, a bill must be presented in Parliament, where deputies will have the freedom to vote.

Public opinion evolved significantly on this issue. Last summer, two-thirds of Germans were against mandatory vaccines, now 64% are in favor, according to polls by the television channels RTL and n-tv.

On the other hand, a long-awaited ruling by the Constitutional Court, on Tuesday, rejected complaints against the national restrictions imposed by federal legislation earlier this year, which constitutes a kind of endorsement for this and other future decisions of the new chancellor.

Pending an eventual approval of the mandatory vaccination, Germany must adopt other restrictions to contain the infections.

Some states tightened access limitations for the unvaccinated.

This Thursday must go a step further with the prohibition of their entry into non-essential shops.

Possible closures of bars and nightclubs for the entire population are also mentioned, and the Bundesliga (the German soccer championship) could once again play matches with empty stands.

In the state of Bavaria, one of the main focuses, a Rosenheim hospital warned of the total saturation of its emergency department, lighting its interior red.
