Gabriela Fossatiwill mark a political alliance with the presidential candidate Laura Raffo and will launch into the political field in support of the National Party; the lawyer, who had great exposure due to being in charge of the Astesian Casewas very critical of Uruguayan politics.
The former prosecutor will unite politically with the presidential candidate, Laura Raffo, within the framework of the next elections the following year. As reported by El País, the lawyer and the economist have been negotiating for months the incorporation of Fossati into Raffo’s political space through National Alliance. Meanwhile, they assured that the announcement would be after the presentation of Fossati’s book, which was presented two weeks ago.
It is estimated that the announcement will be made this Thursday at noon in a press conference announced by Raffo’s team in the Sumar headquarters – the political space of the pre-candidate –, located in Plaza Independencia and in front of the Executive Tower.
In the press release, it was established that the incorporation of a “prominent figure” but that does not belong to the political arena. Meanwhile, according to sources confirmed to the media, he is a prominent figure who had a media relevance important in the last year.
A strained relationship with the government
In March, the former prosecutor was removed from the case of Alejandro Astesianoformer custodian of Luis Lacalle Pou accused of criminal association, influence peddling for the sale of Uruguayan passports to Russian citizens and forgery of documents.
According to the prosecutor, it is “obvious and evident” that she was separated for wanting to investigate Gustavo Leal. “The first two months of investigation were very difficult. I obtained an arrest warrant from the presidential custodian, that was obviously a very important shock and annoyance. At first the reaction was one of great loneliness. Yes, I can say that it did not go down well,” Fossati explained to Radio Sarandí in April.
In that sense, the prosecutor assures that it is “obvious and evident” that she was removed from the case because she wanted to investigate the reference of the Wide Front, Gustavo Leal. “It had never happened to me that there was someone who could not be investigated, I think it is unjustified,” she remarked and assured that he was evaluating taking the matter to the ethics committee of the Bar Association.
Raffo’s competition within the National Party
Last week, the Secretary of the Presidency, Alvaro Delgado, confirmed that he will be a pre-candidate within the National Party in next year’s elections and, hoping to avoid the internal one, he anticipated: “I want to be the next president.”
Along with the in-person secretary, the senator also announced his candidacy Jorge Gandini, who stated that he comes “from the Wilsonist branch, which today is a minority within the party, but which represents many people.”
However, the main competition within the National Party for Laura Raffo is Delgado, who leads the polls with 12%, followed by the economist Laura Raffo with 4%. While the vice president Beatriz Argimon (who declined his nomination) and the senator Jorge Gandini, they count with 1% each.
