A postal worker is said to have stolen thousands of pieces of mail over five years. According to a release from the Interior Ministry, the man was discovered by investigators from the Federal Criminal Police Office (BK) who had made bogus purchases on the Internet. Last September, a colleague observed the 50-year-old opening envelopes, taking the contents and throwing the envelopes away.
The detectives had made fictitious purchases in June and July, including counterfeit money and forged documents. But they waited in vain for the deliveries; a document had already been put out for search. On September 20, 2023, the delivery person was observed by a colleague opening the envelopes at the delivery base in Vienna-Landstrasse. The police then asked the delivery driver if he would let them check his home address, which he allowed.
There, the investigators were astonished: They found thousands of stamps, trading cards, telephone prepaid cards, voucher cards and perfumes and the like. The sought-after forged document and magic mushrooms were also seized. When asked about the counterfeit money and the forged documents, the man stated that he had also stolen them, but immediately recognized them as counterfeits and therefore disposed of them.
The damage is estimated at a four-digit euro value. The man was reported to the public prosecutor’s office on suspicion of commercial theft, suppression of documents and violation of the confidentiality of letters as well as suppression of letters as well as under the Narcotics Drugs Act.
