Upper Austrian Senior Citizens’ Association: “Less lonely, more together”

In the “quiet time” of the year – which is rather hectic and loud for many people – the silence only comes where loneliness is at home. This affects all social groups, but senior citizens in particular suffer from being alone in the (pre-)Christmas period.

To counteract this, the Upper Austrian Senior Citizens’ Association offers activities during Advent for older people who are in the mood for companionship. In the press conference on November 30th, state chairman Josef Pühringer and state manager Franz Ebner presented the program for this season again.

Loneliness in old age

There are many reasons why seniors are more lonely. On the one hand, society is more mobile, while the mobility of individuals decreases significantly with age. On the other hand, there are changes in life circumstances, such as separations or the age-related death of friends and relatives. After all, loneliness makes you sad and sick in the long run. Studies show that the risk of developing Alzheimer’s doubles for people who are alone a lot. Social interaction has a positive effect on mental performance and prevents depression, which is directly linked to Alzheimer’s. This makes external offers that help those affected out of their isolation and integrate them into social life in an age-appropriate manner all the more important.

According to this year’s senior survey by the IMAS Institute, the desire not to be lonely and to have regular contact with other people is the number one life goal in old age. Close behind are physical health and financial security.

Events of the Upper Austrian Senior Citizens’ Association:

• “Spend Christmas Eve together”: Contemplative gathering on December 24th from 10 a.m.; free of charge, register at 0732/775311-1
• Upper Austria Advent singing in the Landestheater Linz: There are still tickets available for Friday, December 15th, 2 p.m. For those who cannot afford the tickets, a certain free contingent is available.
• “Greetings, how are you?”: Free conversation offer from the state board, every Friday in Advent from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., on 0732/775311-723
