During the Nazi era, around 300 concentration camp prisoners were interned in the “Gusen III” subcamp in the town of Lungitz in the municipality of Katsdorf.
Because the use of concentration camp prisoners is one of the focuses of the seminar “Cannons instead of butter! Economics and Politics in National Socialism” in the history and political education teacher training program at the Johannes Kepler University, the participants went on an excursion to Lungitz at the beginning of November.
Together with Holocaust mediation expert Wolfgang Schlitz, the students explored the prisoners’ desolate working and living conditions as well as the camp’s relationships with regional society.
Historical text and image documents combined with the inspection of the structural remains of the warehouse and company building made the past tangible.
The students also got an impression of how the crimes of National Socialism can be taught in school lessons.
