According to IMAS, there is not yet a trend reversal; the Linz pollsters still describe 2023 as “below average optimistic”, but a slight improvement compared to the previous year has been noted. According to the study presented on Friday, 37 percent of those surveyed are skeptical and 28 percent are concerned about the coming year, while 30 percent are confident.
IMAS has divided the past few years into four phases. The initial situation before Corona was “sunny”. 48 percent of those surveyed gave the thumbs up in February 2020. From the outbreak of the pandemic to the start of the war in Ukraine, the mood of Austrians was “volatile”, i.e. there were months of ups and downs. With the war in Ukraine in 2022, the basic mood plummeted, the proportion of those surveyed who were confident was just 19 percent in October 2022. From the middle of this year – phase four – the mood began to brighten cautiously.

Economic forecast bad for 44 percent
As far as the economic assessment is concerned, however, 44 percent of Austrians expect the situation to worsen in 2024. And only 29 percent have the impression that “most people in Austria are satisfied with their lives”, 48 percent did not see it that way.
For the study, 1,000 people aged 16 and over were interviewed in person every month from 2019 to 2023; this year there were 500 in July and September.
