The rear end of the Japanese water worm, which is up to nine centimeters long, also has antennae and swimming bristles. At some point, the rear end – filled with eggs or sperm – separates from the rest of the body and swims away as a four-eyed reproductive unit in search of a mate, reports a team led by Toru Miura from the University of Tokyo.

The researchers suspect that the separated tails protect the mother animal if the rear end becomes prey, because it can divide again.
