One of Hallstatt’s oldest inns ceased operations. Ferdinand “Ferdl” Törö, landlord of the “Zur Mühle” inn, went into his well-deserved retirement. He took over the business, originally a Naturfreunde Hallstatt youth hostel, 34 years ago and opened a pizzeria on the side. In 2002, the “Mühle”, which stands directly on the Mühlbach, was taken over and renovated by the market town of Hallstatt. Only the old restaurant was left unchanged.

In the “Mühle” there were sociable evenings and a regulars’ table where there was a lot of discussion but also celebration. Young people were always a particular concern of his. That’s why there were many events in the “Mühle”, such as darts tournaments, hometown evenings, entertainment evenings, meetings, birthday parties, singing groups, Krambampperl burning, curling and, above all, the “Mühle Racing Team” club. Ferdinand Törö’s farewell party was correspondingly emotional.

The community now wants to develop plans for the future use of the building and has started a leader project. “It is entirely conceivable that the mill will continue to be a catering and overnight accommodation business in the future,” says Mayor Alexander Scheutz. “But I don’t want to prejudge the project developers. The only thing that is certain is that the house is in need of renovation.”
