Just before the first weekend of Advent, heavy snow began to fall in Upper Austria. Even the people of Linz woke up on Friday in a “winter wonderland”. The onset of winter also led to accidents and rescues; several fire departments had to be deployed, especially in the Mühlviertel and Innviertel.

It’s probably just the beginning: It’s snowing heavily and persistently throughout the night. “Some areas are getting more snow than they have in a long time,” says Claudia Riedl from Geosphere Austria. The meteorologist expects 20 to 30 centimeters of new snow in the central area, 40 centimeters could arrive in the Mühlviertel, and in the mountains the snow cover will increase by more than half a meter. “I would avoid driving at night and in the morning,” says the meteorologist.

The first Sunday of Advent will be cheesy

The snowfall is only expected to gradually decrease over the course of tomorrow, Saturday. Only a few flakes will fall on Sunday night. Then follows a cheesy first Advent. The sun, which comes out in the afternoon, especially in the west and south of the country, makes the snow cover glitter.

If you want to take advantage of the friendly weather for a winter walk, you should dress warmly. After the snow, frost settles over the land. Temperatures will be below zero throughout Sunday. But it’s getting colder. On Monday morning temperatures of up to minus 13 degrees are possible, in some places the temperatures do not go above minus six degrees even during the day. If the nights are starry and with little wind, temperatures around or below -20°C are possible in the Mühlviertel.

It stays white

The remaining days will remain frosty. Claudia Riedl expects “only mild plus temperatures”. Snow enthusiasts can be happy: “The snow should last at least a week, and it will stay white in Linz too.”
