Sanitary ware manufacturers fire their products in gas ovens. The Gmunden company Laufen has so far caused around 5,000 tons of CO2 per year. But that is now history. Laufen recently became the first producer in the world to put a tunnel kiln into operation that is heated electrically. The electricity required for this is generated using a large photovoltaic system on site. Laufen Gmunden is the first manufacturer of sanitary ceramics in the world to produce climate-neutrally.
The Spanish Roca Group, Laufen’s parent company since 1999, sees the technological quantum leap in Gmunden as a pilot project. Roca, a group with 21,000 employees, has set itself the goal of producing CO2-free production at all of its 79 locations by 2045. At Traunsee, washbasins, toilets and bidets are manufactured with particularly high design and quality standards. The location is considered an innovation center within the group. “We knew: If we could develop this oven anywhere, it would be in Gmunden,” says Christian Schäfer, Managing Director of Laufen Austria AG.
To develop the tunnel kiln in Gmunden, Roca entered into a partnership with the German manufacturer Keramischer Ofenbau GmbH and also acquired the majority share in the company. The producer is the market leader in energy-efficient ceramic ovens. The new furnace in Gmunden requires only a third of the energy previously used with the same combustion output. It has already been registered with the European Patent Office.
