While, as reported, the fire brigades were already occupied with numerous accidents in the early morning traffic, the situation continued to worsen over the course of Friday. In the late afternoon and evening, buses in Linz also got stuck on the snow-slick streets; towards the evening they were in places with snow chains and some stops could no longer be reached.

The hotspot was Leonding and in Linz the Freinberg and Froschberg, according to the traffic control center of the Linz lines. Because of the slippery snow, there were severe disruptions on a number of routes. Some stops could no longer be reached at all, said a control center employee in an interview with nachrichten.at.

In detail it looked like this in the evening hours:

  • Line 26 commuted between St. Margarethen and Theater – Römerberg and Freinberg could no longer be served.
  • Line 27 was traveling between the main station and Klammstrasse via Sandgasse (western bypass), and Froschberg could no longer be reached.
  • Line 101 bus ran between Urnenhain Urfahr and Schatzweg – but no traffic was possible between Schickenedersteig and Aichinger.
  • Line 102 only ran between Rudolfstrasse and Aichwiesen.
  • Line 106 only ran between Florianerstraße and Kremstorferstraße.
  • There was a delay on line 191 due to an accident and slippery snow, and travel between Meixnerkreuzung and St. Martin was impossible.
  • Line 192 only ran between Linz-Theatergasse and St. Margarethen. The route in Leonding was not accessible for buses.

“It particularly affected the small city bus lines, which often go up mountains. We were no longer able to get to everything and sometimes had to turn around earlier. You just have to say: safety comes first,” said the control center employee. Although the city’s snow clearing vehicles were in full operation, they were unable to cope with the amount of snow. In some cases they had to put on snow chains themselves in order to be able to continue driving. “Fortunately, we rarely have problems like today,” said the control center employee. How long the situation will remain so tense cannot currently be predicted, it was said in the evening.

Numerous accidents in the country

There were minor and major accidents throughout the state. Among other things in the Upper Mühlviertel: A 30-year-old from the Freistadt district was driving on the snow-slick B38 from Helfenberg towards Haslach on Friday around 4:25 p.m. when his car skidded in a sharp right-hand bend and hit the rear left side of the vehicle The front of an oncoming car crashed. The young driver of the vehicle, an 18-year-old from the Freistadt district, was taken to Rohrbach Hospital with an unspecified degree of injury.

All hands full

The fire brigades in the country had their hands full – as did the employees of the state warning center: “I didn’t count it. But we have a lot of trees on the roads and cars that have come off the roads,” says an employee quickly before he has to hang up again and answer the next emergency call.
