The United Nations headquarters was cordoned off at the end of the morning due to the presence of the armed man, according to organization officials. “The UN headquarters is closed, there is police activity“, confirmed to AFP the spokesman of the organization, Stephane Dujarric.
“The security services of the UN (Undss in English) wish to inform that there is a police incident in progress on First Avenue between 42nd and 43rd streets. All staff and delegates are asked to remain in place.”explained the statement from the UN Security department, picked up by the Sputnik news agency.
First Avenue and the streets around the United Nations headquarters were blocked to traffic and a helicopter was flying over the building located in downtown Manhattan.
According to an official who requested anonymity, “a man with a rifle threatens to kill himself” in front of one of the entrances of the building.

The avenue flanking the UN headquarters was closed to circulation. In the photos observed by AFP, the man who caused the closure of the organization was in front of a fence and the police were taking cover behind a van.
The closure of the headquarters has not generated any disturbance inside the building, where the Security Council continued a meeting devoted to Iraq.
