The US agency NOAA warned of a possible threat of tsunami waves in the Philippines, Indonesia, Palau and Malaysia.
The Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Philippines (Phivolcs) warned of a “destructive tsunami with life-threatening wave heights”. Wave heights of more than one meter above normal tides are possible – and possibly even higher waves in closed bays. The authorities initially reported the quake as having a magnitude of 6.9. It happened on Saturday evening at 10:37 p.m. local time.
There were initially no reports of victims or damage. People in the coastal areas of Surigao Del Sur and Davao Oriental provinces on the east coast of Mindanao were advised to move to higher ground or flee inland. According to the Seismological Institute of the Philippines, a tsunami could follow around midnight (local time, 5 p.m. CET). A little later it could reach the west coast of Japan.
