Two hours without electricity, three hours without water – that’s what it looked like at home on Saturday morning, reports an OÖN reader from Koglerau in the municipality of Puchenau. He and his family solved the situation pragmatically: “When we flushed the toilet, we helped ourselves with melted snow, so we brought in a large bucket of snow, let it melt and then poured it into the cistern. It worked perfectly.” There is now electricity and water again, but an unpleasant feeling remains: “Of course you ask yourself, for how long.”
Innviertel particularly affected
Many people in the state are currently feeling like him. As of Saturday afternoon, 25,000 households were in the service area Network Upper Austria without electricity, the highest level on Saturday was 30,000 households without power at the same time. More than 100 troubleshooting technicians are on duty and in many cases are supported by the local fire department: “We are trying to work through the trouble spots, but it is very challenging, especially in the Innviertel. “We have a lot of forest lines in the Schärding and Braunau districts,” says Wolfgang Denk, spokesman for Netz OÖ.

Trees repeatedly fall on power lines, which makes repairing the lines dangerous. “People’s safety is the top priority. There are always critical points because the snow is very heavy,” says Denk. Although good progress is being made, the weather situation doesn’t really give cause for hope. If the cold really comes on Sunday, the situation could get worse again: “If this heavy snow freezes on the trees, they are permanently stressed. It doesn’t take much for them to snap.”

In the supply area of Linz electricity Up to 9,000 households were without power on Saturday morning. The situation has now improved (as of 2 p.m.). “We currently have 6,000 households without electricity,” says Linz AG press spokeswoman Susanne Gillhofer. Linz AG is responsible for the electricity supply for the Lower Mühlviertel, the city of Linz, Leonding and Enns. The power outages affected households throughout the service area. It is rare for outages to occur in urban areas: “We haven’t had a weather event like this in a long time.” Good progress is currently being made in the restoration. “If the weather conditions stay like this, we don’t expect any more major outages,” says Gillhofer confidently.

Work stopped for the time being
Over the course of the afternoon, a lot of trouble spots were resolved. However, the snowfall is continuing and wind is still expected, according to Energie AG late on Saturday afternoon. It is therefore to be expected that customers will still not be able to be supplied overnight until tomorrow. All ongoing repairs will be completed after dark, but no new repairs can be started for safety reasons. Work will resume tomorrow morning.
