Up to 30 centimeters of new snow has accumulated in the central area of Linz in the past 24 hours, and even a little more in some places. For the state capital, this is an event that only occurs every few years – and poses challenges for the city’s emergency services.

Both the snow clearing team from the urban green and street management division as well as the professional fire brigade and the volunteer fire brigades recorded a large number of operations throughout the night. The snow clearance team with a total of 56 people and all vehicles is in constant use to clear main and secondary lanes. Linz Linien informs on its website that there may still be disruptions and delays in public transport.

Professional fire departments and volunteer fire departments have often had to go out to remove fallen trees from roads and power lines. For example, the Pichling Volunteer Fire Department warned on its Facebook page: “If possible, please avoid driving. Without four-wheel drive, it is impossible to get through Pichling in some places.”

The Ebelsberg volunteer fire department was also on duty after trees fell onto cars under the weight of snow. According to the weather forecasts, it is expected that the operations will continue throughout the day.

“Avoid parks”
Because of the heavy snow pressure and the associated danger from falling branches, the Volksgarten and the Christmas market there were closed as a precaution, the city of Linz announced on Saturday afternoon. Bauernberg Park and the B129 in the direction of Wilhering are also currently closed. The city of Linz and its emergency services appeal to the population to avoid parks and to avoid taking avoidable routes in traffic.
“I ask the people of Linz to understand the precautionary closures of the parks and would like to thank all employees of the city of Linz who have been on continuous duty since the night hours. The situation is being continuously evaluated by the responsible business areas,” said Mayor Klaus Luger quoted in a broadcast.
