LASK’s first team lacked penetration – 0-0

“I can live with the point,” said LASK coach Thomas Sageder after the 0-0 draw in the Bundesliga away game against Austria Vienna. Despite the circumstances, he had to force himself to be satisfied. “What has been going on with us in the last 48 hours has been challenging.”

After the Europa League game in Liverpool on Thursday (0:4), he gradually lost players. The absence of Ibrahim Mustapha after his ankle injury at Anfield was clear. Philipp Ziereis and Ivan Ljubic sustained injuries there and were not fit in time. Yesterday Captain Robert Zulj and Sascha Horvath also reported sick.

Sageder had to come up with something: Instead of the 3-4-3, he opted for a 4-2-3-1, which worked well, especially in defense. “The back four worked well. We were very stable,” said goalkeeper Tobias Lawal after the final whistle. He hardly had to intervene.

“A big compliment to the team for making me feel even colder than it already was,” said the ÖFB team goalkeeper, shivering and with a wink in the Sky interview. He particularly praised the reservists who stepped in. “It wasn’t easy for them. There was half a new team on the pitch, but we did really, really well.”

“Too little penetrating power”

The athletes achieved little offensively. That’s why Sageder was critical. “We have now played 25 games since the start of the season. If we really want to be a top team, we have too few chances and too little impact.” Without the feverish inspiration Zulj and Horvath, the attacking game in Vienna was harmless.

“It’s a good chance for the players who haven’t played much so far,” the coach said before the game and named Lenny Pintor, Ebrima Darboe and Moussa Kone in the starting line-up. All three had previously been chasing fitness and form. Kone in particular took advantage of the opportunity. “He particularly demonstrated his ability to secure the ball,” said Sageder, praising the center forward, who was recommended for further appearances.

“The rest was fine. We saw that the guys who were built up in the fall season made a good impression.” They helped to continue two series: LASK remained undefeated in the seventh duel with Austria in a row, and in Vienna the athletes even didn’t lose any of the last nine games.

Now the athletes can breathe a little: On Saturday the LASK in Lustenau concludes the Bundesliga autumn, and the following Thursday an intensive year comes to an end with the Europa League home game against Toulouse.
