Avalanche in Salzburg: Apparently no victims were buried

Reports of missing persons had not been confirmed and there were no signs of anyone buried. The Salzburg mountain rescue service reported this in a press release.

The avalanche occurred around 12:30 p.m. in the area of ​​the southern slopes of the 2,217 meter high Seekareck. According to initial witness reports, four variant drivers entered this area, but two only left the cone. A major operation followed with 22 mountain rescuers from Obertauern and Radstadt together with three mountain rescue dog teams and three helicopter teams with Alpine police. Part of the team, including search dogs, was immediately flown by the rescue helicopter to the avalanche cone at around 1,900 meters. Helicopters circled above the cone and specifically scanned for signals of possible buried victims, and one area was probed with poles.

For a long time there was a “very unclear situation,” as mountain rescue spokeswoman Maria Riedler previously told the APA. The length of the avalanche cone at around 150 meters and a break-off edge of around 90 centimeters and the many ski tracks in the area of ​​the avalanche exit made the search difficult. The spot is popular with tourers, said Riedler. There was also a missing person report in between, “but in the end we were unable to discover anyone buried and no missing person report was received. Therefore, the operation was called off at around 3 p.m.,” said operations manager Michael Koch in the press release.

Where there is currently an increased risk of avalanches

Especially in Tyrol Winter sports enthusiasts were warned on Sunday to exercise “great restraint” where there is a high avalanche danger of level 4 on the five-level danger scale.

In Vorarlberg The avalanche danger was significant (level 3), but an appeal was also made to the population there. After the snowfall ended, events in the two westernmost federal states returned to normal, although there were still many disruptions such as road closures.

According to the avalanche warning service Lower Austria Caution was also advised here on Sunday: in the Ybbstal Alps, the Rax-Schneeberg area, Semmering and the Tuernitz Alps, for example, the danger of avalanches above 1,000 meters was considerable. It was warned that fresh, brittle wind slabs could be released on slopes above 30 degrees even with a small additional load. Gliding snow avalanches were possible in the middle altitudes. In the Gutenstein Alps the avalanche danger was rated as moderate.
