During the course of the day, the first long-distance trains should run from Munich towards Austria again. According to ÖBB, the train route from Salzburg to Munich was open again earlier than planned. However, there may still be individual deviations and delays. The connection between Innsbruck and Munich, however, still has to be cleared and is expected to be used again from Thursday.
There had been no take-offs and landings since operations began at 6 a.m. The airport had already announced the interruption of air traffic on Monday evening with reference to the forecast freezing rain. According to the information, passengers in Munich must continue to expect “massive restrictions”. Around 100 of the 770 takeoffs and landings originally planned for Tuesday are still expected in the afternoon, the spokesman said.
Hundreds of travelers were still stranded at Munich Airport on Tuesday. They would be provided with food and drink. Camp beds are also available. Heavy snowfall in large parts of Bavaria had already severely affected airport operations over the weekend.

The German Weather Service (DWD) expects danger from freezing rain and slippery conditions in the coming nights, especially in the south and east of Bavaria. According to the spokesman, it is difficult to assess whether there could be another temporary stop to flight operations in Munich.
After the massive disruptions caused by the onset of winter in Bavaria, the first long-distance trains are scheduled to run from Munich towards Austria again on Tuesday. A railway spokeswoman said on Tuesday that they were initially planning to have “very few trains” on the routes to Salzburg and Kufstein. The company also expects improvements in the train connections between the Bavarian capital, Stuttgart and Nuremberg over the course of the day.
The situation is also slowly easing in regional traffic around Munich. Trains are running again on several external routes of the S-Bahn in the surrounding area. So far, the S3 has only been running a single line on its entire regular route.
In order to make the routes passable again more quickly, the railway ordered additional clearing vehicles to Bavaria from, among others, Baden-Württemberg and Hesse. More than 20 machines are now in use there. Experts checked whether this number could be increased. However, the persistent winter weather and freezing rain made the clearance work more difficult. Passengers would also be asked to postpone non-essential trips until Wednesday.
