Three to four percent of all breast cancers are hereditary due to BRCA1/BRCA2 mutations. Those affected often become ill at a young age. Surgical removal of breast tissue has been established as a possible prevention.
An international team of scientists with participation from Vienna has now documented the benefit: Breast cancer mortality decreases by around three quarters as a result of mastectomy, as the removal of breast tissue is called. In the mid-1990s, gene mutations BRCA1 and BRCA2 were discovered, which are hereditary and often lead to breast or ovarian cancer.
Around one in 300 women and an equal proportion of men have such gene changes, which increase the risk of breast cancer to up to 70 percent or more by the age of 80.
The study authors calculated that with such a surgical procedure, breast cancer mortality in affected women would only be 0.95 percent within 15 years.
