The National Party campaigns to approve night raids

The senator for National Party, Carlos Camytogether with Sergio Botana, led a press conference to talk about the bill that establishes the modification of the Constitution of the Republic to allow nighttime raids.

Legislator Camy appeared on behalf of the sector Add inside of the National Party in conjunction with Botana, who represented Country Space. The latter signed the Sumar bench bill with the aim of enabling nighttime raids through a constitutional reform that will be put to the vote in the next elections.

For this, the sector Add must gather 52 signatures from legislators. If that number is achieved, the project will be presented to the president of the general Assemblywho will send it to the Electoral Court. This will be in charge of enabling the plebiscite.

“Night sanitation is an essential tool to access better security levels What the country has achieved at the present time is what is missing. It is the essential tool for combating the great crime and especially the drug trafficking”, Botana stressed in the press conference to which he attended Ambit. In that sense, Botana assured that they are “absolutely convinced that what is important is the objective and not the route.”

According to Senator Camy, Uruguay It is one of the four countries in the world, within a group of 203 nations, that does not have night raids enabled. “Organized crime and fundamentally drug trafficking take advantage of this advantage that gives them Constitution of the Republic to facilitate their activity at night and we know what happens in our neighborhoods, in our towns,” he assured.

A reform with history

Botana assured that this reform of the Constitution is one among many and one of them was the one promoted by former senator Larrañaga through the “Live without fear” campaign, which had the support of more than 1,100,000 Uruguayans. For its part, another was also carried out in 2016 by the former senator bordaberry, accompanied by the then senator and today deputy, Ope Pasquet.

“If we add to that the support of the former president of the Supreme Court of Justice; the former attorney general of the Nation; main opinions of the chair of constitutional rights of our country; judges and prosecutors specialized in drugs; the professional police – in the previous and this government administration -, it is easy to conclude that the people need this constitutional change,” stated Senator Botana who assured that even the Town meeting has representatives support the initiative.

Criticism of the Broad Front

The Broad Front, meanwhile, would be one of the main obstacles for the authorization of night raids to advance through parliament. In this regard, the Frente Amplista senator Charles Carrera He considered that it is a “tool that could be discussed,” but he emphasized: “If it is to confront the mouths, it is not effective.”

“They told us that the main tool for security was LUC, It is a tool that we already have and we are worse in terms of drug trafficking, organized crime and money laundering. We must seriously discuss the serious problems with drug trafficking. Now there is discussion about the raids, they need to get to the Campaign saying that they needed another tool,” he questioned, pointing out the initiative as “one more excuse.”

Likewise, Carrera assured that a project of these characteristics “puts you in danger of life to the neighbors and the police.”
