GRIES CHURCHES. Andrea Binder is the icon of Upper Austrian women’s football: As a player and official at Union Kleinmünchen, she brought many girls and women onto the pitch, not only in her own club. She supported and promoted the expansion of women’s football throughout the state. So there couldn’t be a more fitting patron saint for the big women’s indoor cup with which the women’s teams in Grieskirchen start the new year. From January 5th to 7th, 2024, the top teams will compete against each other in the “Andrea Binder Indoor Cup” in the Raiffeisen sports arena in the school center.
Thriving women’s football
The Upper Austrian Football Association (OÖFV) is further developing the traditional tournament this year – the association wants to take into account the increasing popularity of women’s football, says President Gerhard Götschhofer: “It’s a pleasure to see how the area is flourishing. We also want people to see what has happened in women’s football.” Among other things, there are several new partners this year such as “Auto Günther” as the main sponsor. “We have further professionalized the framework, the partners offer attractive prices and support the event,” says Götschhofer. The association also wants to increase the visibility and importance of women’s football through more public relations work.
Kick-off is at 9 a.m. on all three match days. The junior teams start on Friday, January 5th. On Saturday it will be the turn of the women’s classes, and on Sunday the teams from the Upper Austria League will compete in the Raiffeisen Arena.
As captain, Vanessa Hörmanseder leads the defending champions from the Wallern/Krenglbach syndicate into the tournament. She has already been to the Cup in Grieskirchen several times: “The Indoor Cup is always something very special because all the teams come together and play against each other. Different rules apply indoors, so anyone can beat anyone. There is always a special atmosphere,” she says Footballer.
Women’s football pioneer Karl Römer, a long-time colleague of Andrea Binder, was again heavily involved in the organization this year: “Grieskirchen has the best conditions for our tournament with its beautiful hall. I’m pleased that we have already fixed dates for the next three years .”
Mayor Maria Pachner (VP) is already looking forward to the cup: “It will be football at its best again.” The competition has become well established in recent years. “We are pleased that Grieskirchen can host this year again. Of course we are keeping our fingers crossed for our local heroes for the tournament,” says the mayor.
