According to police, at least four people were injured, one of them seriously, in a suspected gun attack in the center of Brussels.
As a police spokeswoman told the AFP news agency on Wednesday evening, the officers were alerted around 7:30 p.m. At this point, the suspected attacker or attackers were already on the run. However, there is currently “no evidence of a terrorist act.”
The incident occurred on Avenue de la Toison d’Or, a busy shopping street in the center of the Belgian capital. According to Belgian media, a shopping center had to be evacuated. Television footage showed a large contingent of police vehicles and ambulances early in the evening.
Second highest terror alert level
The second highest terror alert level currently applies in Belgium. On October 16, Brussels was shaken by an Islamist attack. A Tunisian shot two Swedish fans and injured two other people before a European Championship qualifier between Belgium and Sweden in Brussels. The perpetrator was initially able to escape, but was tracked down and shot by the Belgian police a day later. The jihadist organization Islamic State (IS) later said the perpetrator was one of its fighters.

Gun attack at US university
At least three people were killed in a gun attack at a university in the US city of Las Vegas. The city police announced this on Platform X on Wednesday evening. Another person is in critical condition in hospital. According to police, the suspected perpetrator is also dead. How the shooter died was initially unclear, as was his motive.
Investigators did not initially provide any details about the victims or how the attack unfolded. However, the police emphasized that there was no further danger to the public.
In the USA, rampages and fatal shootings are sadly part of everyday life. Firearms are easily available there and are widely circulated. Deadly attacks with many victims regularly shake the country – for example at schools, supermarkets, nightclubs or at large events. Calls for stricter gun laws regularly come to nothing.
