Significantly warmer temperatures will set in in the west of the country this weekend. The snow in the lowlands should be over for now.
- Snowy Christmas? That’s how high the chances of a white Christmas are this year
In detail: On Friday, the holiday, fields of fog and high fog persist in some cases over the lowlands in the north, in the east, on the eastern edge of the Alps, in southeastern Styria and in inner Alpine basins and valleys. However, due to the southeast wind picking up regionally, the sun can come out during the day, especially in the eastern region. Away from the typical foggy areas, it is often sunny, only in Vorarlberg and North Tyrol there are already many clouds from a warm front and in the extreme west there can already be light precipitation, the snowfall limit is 1,000 meters above sea level. The early temperatures are minus twelve to minus two degrees, the daily maximum temperatures are usually between minus three and plus one degree, and in the far west they are up to plus four degrees.
At the Saturday With the passage of an Atlantic fault, there will be a lot of clouds and some snowfall, especially from Salzburg eastwards, which is likely to increasingly turn into rain at low altitudes. Ice grains or freezing raindrops are also possible in the transition phase. Further to the west and south, the clouds clear up during the day and the sun shines through. The wind is only blowing slightly from east to southwest. From minus eight to plus two degrees in the morning, with the high values in the west, temperatures rise to minus two to plus eight degrees. It will be mildest in the Lake Constance region.
At the Sunday With the influence of disturbances, a precipitation area swings eastwards. There will be some brief snowfall in the north and east down to the lowlands. However, the precipitation quickly turns into rain, and the snowfall limit rises at altitudes between 900 and 1,300 meters above sea level. There is a temporary risk of local black ice. As the day progresses, it clears up more often and the sun appears. A few showers can still pass through on the north side of the Alps. At times there will be very brisk westerly winds, but in the south it will be rather light. The early temperatures range between minus six in the valleys on the southern side of the Alps and plus five in Vorarlberg. The maximum daily temperatures reach two to ten degrees.
Thaw at the beginning of the week
At the Monday In the south and east it is often brighter with sunshine, otherwise dense clouds predominate. Rain occasionally falls, but in the west and especially on the north side of the Alps it rains for longer periods of time. The snowfall limit rises to 1,500 to 2,000 meters above sea level. This means that a widespread thaw can be expected. There is still a temporary slight risk of black ice, especially in the east and in cold air lakes. The wind is blowing weak to moderate, and in places brisk from the west. The early temperatures are minus four to plus six degrees, the daily maximum temperatures are three to eleven degrees, depending on the wind mix.
At the Tuesday It continues to rain persistently in the west of the country. It only snows above 1,800 to 2,300 meters above sea level. The thaw situation continues. Away from the mountains it rains less, in the east and south there is also no precipitation in some areas. There are also a few sunny breaks. The wind will be light to moderate, sometimes brisk in the west. It mostly comes from south to west. The early temperatures reach minus three to plus six degrees, the daily maximum temperatures reach three to twelve degrees.
