According to current studies, loneliness has increased particularly among young adults. The recently presented Austrian Health Report also shows that the psychological stress of those under 30 is noticeably higher than that of older population groups. The feeling of loneliness can make you mentally and physically ill in the long term.
According to a Caritas survey, the pandemic and inflation are two factors that have contributed to worsening circumstances. Once loneliness becomes chronic – that is, it is not just a short-term feeling due to a move or a breakup – it has a negative impact on health. Anyone who always feels lonely has a significantly higher risk of having a heart attack or stroke and developing mental illnesses.

Young people are particularly hard hit because, for example, healthy pensioners are often more socially connected than 18 to 30 year olds. One reason for this could be the higher mobility and uncertain lifestyles that are typical of this age.
According to the health report, only 29 percent of the younger age group (16 to 19 year olds, also known as “Generation Z”) rate their mental health as very good or good. This is well below the average for the entire population. 15 percent of younger people even consider their mental health to be bad or very bad.
