The Styrian Chamber of Labor surveyed the prices and came across blatant price differences:
Prices per meter of Nordmann fir range between 7 and 35 euros. Significant price differences were also recorded for the wooden crosses required for erecting them.
Price comparison pays off
During Advent you can buy Nordmann firs almost everywhere: you can see them at grocery chains as well as directly from Christmas tree farmers, in hardware stores and furniture stores and even at gas stations. However, a price comparison definitely pays off, as the AK found out during a market tour of 28 Styrian suppliers: the prices for a one and a half meter high Nordmann fir, for example, were between 10.50 and 54 euros.
“The price differences are based on the quality criteria of density, appearance and growth. If the one-meter tree is very beautiful, it costs up to 35 euros. If a large tree is not so beautiful, you can get it for 35 euros, so the prices apparently vary from tree to tree,” said AK market researcher Andrea Büdenbender. A comparison is particularly worthwhile for smaller trees. Incidentally, the prices for the large trees have remained almost the same compared to 2022.
Note the red-white-red band
In terms of origin, there is a wide range, with Germany, Denmark and Austria dominating. Christmas tree dealers usually offer regional goods – you can recognize them by the red-white-red band.
To ensure that the tree stands securely, the dealers also offer wooden crosses: their prices range between two and 15 euros, and sometimes they are included in the price of the tree, as the AK has found.
To ensure that the fir tree you buy doesn’t lose its needles on Christmas Eve, consumer advocates have a few tips: The lighter the cut surface, the fresher the tree. From purchase to installation, it should be stored cool but frost-proof.
