“Make it happen” is emblazoned in large letters at the entrance to the university. Looking back, it seems like a really bad joke.

At least 3 people were killed in a gun attack at a university in Las Vegas – according to media reports, by a rejected applicant for a professorship. A fourth victim was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, according to police in the entertainment metropolis in the state of Nevada. The attacker was killed in an exchange of fire with police officers. US President Joe Biden once again called for US gun laws to be tightened.

“There is no longer any danger to the public,” said Las Vegas Sheriff Kevin McMahill after the attacker’s killing. According to authorities, the shots were fired on Wednesday afternoon on the campus of the University of Nevada in Las Vegas. Students were called on to get to safety and the police arrived with a large contingent.

Two officers “immediately” exchanged fire with the attacker, said the head of the university police, Adam Garcia, at a press conference. The suspect was hit and died.

Victim: University employee

US media reported on Thursday that the perpetrator was a 67-year-old academic with connections to schools in the states of Georgia and North Carolina. He applied for a professorship at the University of Nevada and was not accepted. His victims were university employees, not students.

US President Joe Biden was shocked by the attack. In a statement, he condemned the recent “horrific act of gun violence” and again called for US gun laws to be tightened. Congress must impose a ban on semi-automatic rifles.

Texas: Man kills 6 people

Meanwhile, a man who is said to have killed 6 people was arrested in the US state of Texas. The 34-year-old is said to have opened fire in four different locations in the Texas capital Austin on Tuesday, killing four people and wounding two police officers. He is also suspected of having previously killed two people – presumably his parents – in the city of San Antonio.

In the USA there are repeated gun attacks with many people injured or killed. According to the specialized website Gun Violence Archive, there have already been 600 attacks nationwide this year in which four or more people were injured or killed by firearms.

The gambling metropolis of Las Vegas in the western United States was the scene of the deadliest gun attack in US history in 2017. At that time, an assassin shot 58 people at a music festival.
