Algeria increased imports of Uruguayan dairy products

Uruguay occupies third place as a supplier of products of this type to the African country, which is supplied mainly by the European Union.

Between January and September 2023, Algeria increased imports of dairy products at a general level, being Uruguay the third supplier of products of this type to the African country, which is supplied mainly from the European Union (EU).

Uruguay continues to have a great presence in the Algerian market, accounting for 7% of its dairy product imports, being only surpassed by New Zealand, with 34%, and for the EU, with 52%. Behind our country is the Argentina with 4% of the total placements, while the sum of other countries totals 3%.

At the same time, Uruguay is the third largest supplier of whole milk powder, accounting for 13% of the placements of this product in Algeria, which represent 49% of total dairy imports in the African country. Our country is only surpassed by the EU by 14%, and New Zealand, with 65% of sales of this product.

In addition, Uruguay is the fourth largest exporter of butter to Algeriaalthough this product only represents 1% of Algerian dairy imports.

In the annual accumulated to September, Algeria increased dairy imports to 1,337 million dollars, representing a year-on-year variation of 3% compared to the same period in 2022. Along with the increase in values, imported quantities also increased, highlighting a jump of up to 90% in regards to baby formula.

Algeria accounted for 16% of Uruguayan dairy exports during October

During October, Algeria bought 16% of the total dairy products exported from the Uruguaymainly highlighting a 24% participation in whole milk powder placements and 3% in skimmed milk powder placements.

The other countries of Africa that have relevance for Uruguayan placements are Nigeriawhich accounts for 3% of shipments of whole milk powder and 1% of skimmed milk powder; Egypt, with 2% of whole milk powder purchases; and Morocco with 6% of that of butter.
