Uruguay received 18% more international visitors than before the pandemic

The tourist activity It entered 2023 with significant momentum and in the first three quarters of the year it received 18% more international visitors than in 2019, during the pre-pandemic, according to data released by the Ministry of Tourism, which predicts a good season.

The report was carried out by the World Tourism Organization and, taking the period between January and September, the outstanding figure in the country is above the world average, which is at 87% of the levels prior to the health crisis derived from the pandemic of Covid-19.

He Minister of Tourism, Tabaré Viera, noted that the situation “demonstrates a sustained recovery of the sector,” by leading the launch of the Artigas Carnival, which will take place between February 10 and 13 in that department. There, he valued “the importance of this cultural event, which brings together more than 80,000 visitors in four days.”

The work of the government and the generation of employment in the sector

Regarding tourism indicators, See He stated in a press conference that the data highlights the work of the national and departmental governments in the implementation and execution of public policies aimed at the sector so that they can approach the country in this summer season.

To that, he added “the resilience and work of the private sector, which was key to such recovery.” For the leader, “this shows the good direction of the tourism sector”, about which he recalled that “it is responsible for generating 110,000 jobs and a large part of the country’s gross domestic product.”

It is worth remembering that the government promoted several measures to encourage the arrival of tourists this season, such as zero VAT for residents, the differential VAT for foreigners and the program Tourism for All that will subsidize 50% of the accommodation to some sectors.

Other factors that will influence a possible better season are the greater connectivity and arrival of flights, discounts on fuels in strategic areas and the regime Tax Free to encourage purchases.
