One year after Boluarte’s inauguration, social conflict grows

After the attempt to close Congress and the subsequent imprisonment of then-president Pedro Castillo, Dina Boludarte took office as president but her image continues to decline in a context of strong social conflict.

One year after the attempt Pedro Castillo’s self-couphis imprisonment and the assumption of its then vice president, Dina Boluarte, Peru lived a day of demonstrations. Protestants demand resignation of the president, in a context of profound social, economic and political crisis.

The president Boluarte fell in popularity, which does not reach a single digit percentage, the lowest level of his management since he took office on December 7 of last year after the departure of Pedro Castillo, who tried close Congress illegally before they voted impeachment motion against him.

The economic situation is the worst in the country in three decadesnot counting the recession of the pandemic, due to the fall in investments and the blow due to anti-government protests.

Added to the economic context is the lack of trust in institutions like Congress, traditionally discredited. This week the crisis in the Public Ministry worsened with the suspension of the attorney general for a criminal investigation.

Peru: people took to the streets again to demand the resignation of Boluarte and the closure of Congress

On the first anniversary of the president’s government, thousands of Peruvians demonstrated in the streets of Lima and demanded: “Everyone leaves“. In a framework of protest, they asked for the closure of Congress and early electionsreiterating the claims of early 2023 that were marked by strong police repression.

After those demonstrations, which left more than 50 dead in the country, the prosecutor’s office presented a constitutional accusation against Boluarte before Congress at the end of Novemberfor alleged crime of “qualified homicide“.

A few days ago the Government raised the penalties against people who provoke violence in protestsdestroy public or private property or close key roads.

Congress, prosecutor’s office, enough corruption! We want to live in peace“said a woman sitting on the floor, who declined to be identified citing security issues.
