The European Union must engage in dialogue with Russia if it wants to secure energy supplies. This was announced on December 3 by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary Peter Siyjarto.
“When we want to secure our energy supplies before the onset of winter, we must talk with Russia,” he said on the air of Latvian Radio.
Sijarto added that he draws the attention of his colleagues to this issue. In his opinion, if we are talking about long-term cooperation with Russia, then one must understand that some regions of Central Europe are completely dependent on the Russian Federation for energy.
“And don’t shake your own home with political statements,” he concluded.
On November 18, Russian President Vladimir Putin awarded the Order of Friendship to Siyarto for his contribution to the development of relations and cooperation between the two countries.
On October 14, Siyjarto announced that Hungary decided not to supply gas through Ukraine in order to contribute to its energy security.
On October 1, Gazprom began supplying gas to Hungary through the Balkan Stream gas pipeline and pipelines in South-Eastern Europe. The Balkan Stream is a continuation of the Turkish Stream. The Russian side and Budapest signed a contract for the supply of this resource for a period of 15 years on September 27. The document assumes the supply of 4.5 billion cubic meters. meters of gas annually bypassing Ukrainian territory.
The decision of Budapest provoked a sharp reaction from Kiev. The Ukrainian authorities have expressed their intention to apply to the European Commission for an assessment of the conformity of the new Hungarian-Russian gas agreement with European energy legislation.
On October 1, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that he could not take into account Ukraine’s position on this issue. According to him, he should only care about the interests of the Hungarian people.
