More than 400 people were stuck underground, said management at the affected gold mine in Springs, east of Johannesburg. Demonstrating miners took away their colleagues’ entry and exit cards so that they could no longer return to the surface.
The background to the dispute is disputes between rival unions. As recently as October, around 500 miners were stuck underground in the same mine for three days because colleagues from the other union wouldn’t let them out of the mine.
Hundreds of thousands of people work in South Africa’s mines. The country is the largest platinum producer in the world and is also one of the most important exporters of gold, diamonds, coal and other raw materials. Fatal accidents occur again and again in the deepest mines in the world.
