During the day, around 450 targets were attacked on the ground, from the air and from the sea, the army said yesterday. The troops are still in the process of identifying and destroying tunnel shafts, weapons and other terrorist infrastructure, it said. The humanitarian situation for the civilian population in the Gaza Strip is becoming increasingly precarious.
At the same time, the controversial flooding of Hamas’ tunnel system is imminent. Israel says it has now completed the assembly of at least five seawater pumps that will be used to pump water into the Hamas tunnels. With such tactics, Israel wants to destroy the tunnels and drive the terrorists from their underground hideouts.

But the plan is delicate and risky: not just because Israeli hostages are probably still being held in the tunnels. Observers are also warning of further catastrophic destruction. If the tunnels and everything around these structures were to be softened, large parts of the above-ground buildings could also collapse. Civilian casualties would be feared. The long-term effects on the environment would also be fatal. The Gaza Strip’s water supply would be threatened for years.
Meanwhile, there was renewed debate in the UN Security Council about the demand for a humanitarian ceasefire.
