Drug driver engaged in a kilometer-long chase with Vienna police

He ignored red lights and hit a cyclist. He also crashed into an oncoming vehicle and also drove the car onto the sidewalk. Police officers could only save themselves by jumping to the side. The man was arrested. During a routine check, officers from the Meidling City Police Command wanted to stop the Serb near the Gaudenzdorfer Belt in Meidling around 8:30 p.m. The driver ignored the stop signs and fled into the city. The journey covered a distance of around five kilometers through several streets with busy main routes.

Lenker swerved onto the sidewalk and sped toward police officers

At the intersection of Eichenstrasse and the Gaudenzdorfer Belt, all three lanes were blocked by vehicles. The 34-year-old still raced towards the standing column. The police officers tried to stop the driver again, but he swerved onto the sidewalk and drove towards the police officers. The officers were only able to avoid a collision by quickly jumping to the side. The 34-year-old fled further towards Matzleindsdorfer Platz.

Cyclist knocked down at intersection

There he drove through a red light and knocked down a cyclist who was crossing. The 46-year-old was seriously injured as a result. Following police officers and a passer-by provided first aid and called the Vienna emergency services, who took the cyclist to a hospital. The 34-year-old simply continued towards the main train station.

In the area of ​​the intersection of Landstraßer Belt and Jacquingasse, the man drove his car into oncoming traffic and damaged a car. A short time later he crashed into an oncoming vehicle in which four people were sitting. Only this crash stopped the Serb’s motorized escape. As a result of the accident, a 52-year-old woman was seriously injured and a 28-year-old passenger was slightly injured. Both were given emergency medical care by the Vienna Professional Rescue Service and taken to a hospital.

The driver and passenger fled on foot

Immediately after the accident, the 34-year-old and his still unknown passenger fled on foot. However, the driver was stopped after a short chase. He himself complained of pain in his shoulder but refused an examination. The man was temporarily arrested. He was reported on suspicion of resistance to state authority, severe coercion, serious bodily harm, intentional endangerment of the community and violation of the Narcotic Substances Act as well as several administrative violations. His questioning was still pending on Saturday and he was being held by the police.

It was only through luck and the careful behavior of other vehicle drivers and pedestrians that there were no more traffic accidents, the police wrote in a broadcast on Saturday. During his escape, the Serb also damaged several parked vehicles.

Cannabis herb seized

A small amount of cannabis herb was found in the car. The license plates attached to the getaway vehicle were stolen and were also confiscated. Whether the man is the legal owner of the getaway vehicle is the subject of investigations. He didn’t have a driver’s license. A medical officer diagnosed the 34-year-old as suffering from addiction.
