“Together on the mountain, sustainable ski mountaineering” – that is the motto at the start of the somewhat different ski touring season in the Pyhrn-Priel region. “We have already had a strong increase in public arrivals to our courses and offers. The great cooperation with the local businesses and the Pyhrn-Priel tourism association has now motivated us to take the next step”says Hati Finsterer from the Alps Alpine School. It’s not about belittling the individual journey by car, “but rather to make better known the great tours and adventure opportunities that are possible with public transport”says the mountain guide, who has conquered even the highest mountains in Austria by traveling by public transport and on his racing bike – even in winter – and is therefore setting a good example.

In cooperation with the Pyhrn-Priel holiday region, Intersport Pachleitner and the Hinterstoder-Wurzeralm Bergbahnen, sustainable ski tours will be offered to ski tourers at the opening next weekend – December 16th and 17th – on the Wurzeralm and in the Totes Gebirge. By public transport from Linz or the central area. In cooperation with Alps, the OÖNachrichten is giving away 2 x 2 places for one of the two ski touring days to OÖN readers.

  • About the competition:

Just getting there is an adventure

“Thanks to good public bus and train connections, the Pyhrn-Priel holiday region offers ideal conditions for an environmentally friendly journey”says Corinna Polz from the Pyhrn-Priel tourism association. And this is what the sustainable ski tour looks like on the two days: Arrival by train and shuttle service by taxi, from Spital am Pyhrn train station there will be shuttle taxis and e-bikes in addition to the regular, closely scheduled shuttle buses. “Customers who arrive by public transport will have their taxi ride reimbursed as an Alps climate bonus and can travel comfortably without a car”says Finsterer.

If you take the train from Linz at 6:57 a.m., you’ll be in Hinterstoder at 7:59 a.m. – that’s only 20 minutes more net time than by car. “We started two years ago with the Alps ski tour bus and the ski tour taxi and this year we will offer 73 ski tours of all levels of difficulty with public transport to the region”says Finsterer, who has been organizing the ski touring beginners’ days on the Wurzeralm together with the OÖN for ten years.

The conditions are already great this year, and in addition to avalanche training with the mountain guide and expert Heli Steinmassl, the participants can also go on a ski tour – either over the Hintersteineralm or adventurously with Hati Finsterer on an e-bike and ascent to the Karleck. But what is actually special about a sustainable, “greens” Ski tour? Darker: “It’s a completely different experience than when you drive somewhere in the Audi Q7, go up for a moment and then sit back in the warmth.” The paths and the journey – even off the classic ski touring routes – are an adventure. “It’s a completely different feeling for the participants and we only get positive feedback”says Finsterer. The special thing is that the starting point of the tour does not have to be the end point – especially in the Spital am Pyhrn region there are many possibilities for crossings, such as the Warscheneck crossing or tours in the Loigistal. The aim is to improve the CO2 balance when ski touring and to contribute to greater environmental awareness.
