From December 28th to January 6th, 2024, the round leather reigns again in the district sports hall in Schärding. Over six days, hundreds of young footballers from the region and beyond will compete in the Baumit Indoor Cup. The cup will be paused over the New Year. The highlight is traditionally the U15 event, which will take place in the 31st edition on Saturday, January 6, 2024. Organizer Union Esternberg has once again put together a top-class starting field: top international clubs such as Borussia Dortmund, Slavia Prague and VfB Stuttgart are competing against the top domestic teams. The young footballers from Sturm Graz, Austria Vienna and LASK, among others, have confirmed their attendance.

Touch of Premier League

But one club in particular stands out from the starting field this year: The young stars of English record champions Manchester United are coming to the district capital, as in the previous edition, and are once again contributing a significant part to the magical magic of the group. “The Manchester United supervisors were extremely impressed with our tournament last year,” says Johannes Fesel, organizer and long-time mastermind behind the Baumit Indoor Cup. In addition to the kickers from the island, he was also able to convince defending champions Mainz 05 to take part again. From our German neighbors, the young representatives of the second division clubs Kaiserslautern, Karlsruhe and Hertha BSC Berlin are also at the start.

The district sports hall doesn’t just offer potential future football stars the big stage. Clubs from the surrounding area are also fighting for victory in Schärding. The tournament opens on Thursday, December 28th, with the U10 and U13 finals. In the run-up to the U15 event, regional teams also have the opportunity to secure a group place among the qualified top representatives in the preliminary rounds. “The smaller clubs should also be able to play against real top teams. That will also be well received,” says Fesel.

A total of 144 young teams will compete in Schärding over the Christmas holidays. Organizing the event is a huge challenge for him and his team every year, says Fesel. “But for young kickers, indoor tournaments like this are simply a great thing.”
