“They were prohibited from boarding the plane that was to take them to France even though they had a visa” and “their passports were confiscated,” said lawyer Chirinne Ardakani, speaking to the AFP news agency.
The 2023 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Conscience was awarded last October to Mahsa Amini and the “Women, Life, Freedom” movement, bloodily repressed by the authorities in Iran.
The death of Mahsa Amini on September 16, 2022, three days after being detained by the police for wearing her Islamic veil incorrectly, triggered a gigantic wave of demonstrations against Iranian political and religious leaders.
The severe repression of these protests led to the deaths of hundreds of people and thousands of arrests.
“Iranian authorities are mobilized more than ever to prevent the victims’ families from speaking before the international community,” according to Ardakani.
