The Austrian Foreign Ministry will again be headed by Alexander Schallenberg. This was announced on Friday, December 3, by the appointed new chairman of the ruling Austrian People’s Party Karl Nehammer.
“The Foreign Office will be occupied by a man who, in my opinion, was and will be an outstanding foreign minister, Alexander Schallenberg. I will discuss these proposals with the President, ”Nehammer said at a press conference.
At the same time, he added that the reshuffle will take place in the Ministry of Finance, as well as in the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Education and Science.
In October, Sebastian Kurz announced his resignation from the post of Austrian Chancellor in connection with an investigation by the anti-corruption prosecutor’s office. To avoid chaos, he resigned as head of government. At the same time, on December 2, he officially announced that he was leaving the post of chairman of the Austrian People’s Party, which is part of the ruling coalition with the Greens, and was leaving Austrian politics.
Following this, Austrian Chancellor Schallenberg announced his readiness to leave his post. He admitted that he never wanted to take on the function of federal leader of the New People’s Party.
Also, the Minister of Finance of Austria and the head of the Austrian People’s Party Blumel announced their resignation.
According to Vadim Trukhachev, associate professor of the Department of Foreign Regional Studies and Foreign Policy of the Russian State Humanitarian University, the decisions to resign several Austrian politicians are associated with a corruption scandal, due to which Kurz left his post. Trukhachev added that this could negatively affect relations between Vienna and Moscow.
